With a third tournament hosted by Rose Bernstein (who is revealed to be under control by the main villains) in effect, the leader of the mysterious "Those from the Past" organization begins the final phase in his plan to unlock the power of Orochi for his own purpose. The game's story takes place after the events of The King of Fighters XI and concludes the series' "Ash Saga" story arc. It is the last game in the main series to use 2D characters and backgrounds. It also further revamps the gameplay sub-systems, removing most of additions from its predecssor (including the camera zooming effects and the Critical Counter system) while adding new ones (including EX Special/Super Moves and a "Hyper Drive Meter" for cancelling special/super moves into another). The thirteenth main installment of the King of Fighters series, King of Fighters XIII expands on the revamped graphical and gameplay style of its predecessor by adding 11 additional characters (most of whom are returning characters) and bringing back optional pre-defined teams and the game's traditional single-player story. The King of Fighters XIII is a 2D tag-team fighting game developed and released by SNK Playmore for arcades (running PC-based Taito Type X² hardware) in Japan on July 14, 2010.
